How Does a Website Work?

A plain-language explanation of domains, DNS, hosting, servers, browsers, and the files that create a website.

Let us look at how a website works, what a domain or web address is, what a server and hosting do, and how these parts work together without unnecessary technical detail.

A website is the online office of a business. Customers can visit it to learn about the company and its offers.

What is hosting?

Imagine opening a bakery in the physical world. First, you need to rent a place. A website is similar, except that you rent space on a server.

A server is a computer connected to the internet. Special software on that computer delivers the components of the website, including code, images, video, and any other files needed to build a page. It is called a server because it serves the requested information when someone wants to view the site.

Hosting companies rent space and computing resources on their servers. Plans may be paid monthly or for a longer period. The right choice depends on the website's traffic, functions, storage, security, and support requirements.

Each server has an IP address. For a general understanding, an IP address is a numerical identifier that allows devices connected to the internet to locate the correct server.

What is a domain?

The first step in making a website available is choosing a domain. It is the memorable name that customers use to find the business online, similar to the sign above the entrance to a physical shop.

The domain is the part of the address entered in a browser, for example example.com. It gives people a simple way to reach the website without remembering the server's numerical IP address.

What happens when someone opens a website?

A laptop, mobile phone, or tablet uses the domain to locate the correct server. The browser first determines where the site is hosted and then requests the files required for the selected page.

In simple terms, the browser asks the server for the code, text, images, and other resources. The server returns those resources, and the browser assembles them into the designed page shown to the visitor.

How the parts work together

The complete process involves more technical detail, but the essential idea is simple: the server stores and delivers the website, while the domain helps people find it. Understanding this relationship is a useful first step when planning a new website.
